Combing through vintage and antique stores I occasionally find these phrenology heads. Phrenology was a popular study in the 19th century. It was thought that all the components that make up a human personality--emotions, character, thoughts--were located in specific parts of the brain. It was believed that by feeling and examining the skull, one could determine a subject's personality. These ceramic models mapped out the locations of those traits.
This bust is a reproduction and not an antique, but it's sure to be a conversation piece!
